In 1991, the School of Engineering and the Department of Physics merged their individual shops to create what is now called the Joint Engineering & Physics Instrument Shop (JEPIS). JEPIS offers the fundamental machine shop capabilities, including milling, lathing, cutting and welding. JEPIS technical staff can provide assistance in the development of research projects, repairs to equipment, and sourcing of required materials. JEPIS also offers hands-on training and instruction through non-credit basic and advanced machine shop courses. The JEPIS student shop is available to students who have taken both the basic and advanced courses, Mechanical Technology I and II.
JEPIS is administered by Instrumentation for Molecular and Nanoscale Innovation (IMNI) and is run on a user fee basis, where the fees collected are used to partially offset operational expenses. JEPIS is available to Brown University departments as well as external researchers from academic institutions and commercial organizations.
